Call for votes

i got this phone call today from the David Vitter’s campaign HQ. First question: “Can we count on you for for David Vitter?” Nope. i’m not sure about the senate race yet. Second question: “What is the main issue that would influence your vote?” All of them. Third question: “Which issue would you like to know about?” Education and the Arts. “Sorry, i don’t have that information. i have (lists everything currently popular in the newspaper).” Social Security sounds good. “Blah blah blah.”
Thank you for calling my cell phone around dinner time. “Be sure to watch the senate debate tonight.” Saw it last week when it was first aired. “Oh. i didn’t know about that…have a good day.” Sorry, i’m unconvinced. You are the weakest link. Tchüß.
Gotta love politics.
And, for those of you who may have forgotten: i love my girlfriend. She is wonderful. She makes my blood boil.

::Sigh::

Now that i am getting back into the swing of things, i have been working almost non-stop on my paper, breaking only to relieve headaches by beating my head against the computer getting my website to work in harmony with its self. While i have had wonderful progress with my paper (13 solid pages of the history of the problem…i still haven't started proposing my ideas yet!), i haven't seen as much luck with the website. In that realm, i am working on getting the registration and login for the main site to work with the forums site (so that a person need only register once, log in once, and get the goodies in both). The people that do tech support for the program i am using for the main site have no clue when it comes to this subject. The people that do the tech support for the program for the forums have a single tutorial that they expect a person with sufficient know-how would be able to adapt to and work with it. Well, they're wrong. (1) i don't have the sufficient know-how (which is why i am not allowing people to register to the website yet…it goes down frequently as i screw up something and spend the next 12 hours fixing it) and (2) their tutorial leaves people with a very rudimentary knowledge of the log-in process of the forums. So, as i have played around (”hmm…what does THIS do??”), i have gotten some things working, but still no single login yet. The single registration is almost done.
As far as my paper, i have settled on it being entitles “Omniscience & Future Actions” and, oddly enough, that's what it deals with. Speaking with my primary professor, he seems optimistic that i may be able to get published in a scholarly journal (not one of the big ones, though), which would look *really* good on my grad school applications. So, i have been bouncing between “get it done” mode and “perfectionist” mode. My rough draft is due Friday (thanks to an extension), with the final draft due about 2 weeks later (Wednesday, 17 November). i hope to be able to defend it before Thanksgiving holidays so that i won't have to worry about it at all. In final summary, i have read a stack of books nearly four feet nigh (not joking, either) and a stack of journal articles three inches thick since the beginning of the semester for this one paper. Now that i am finishing it up, i can start catching up in my readings for class (especially that Heidegger class…i need to read over 200 pages of Heidegger by next Friday!). Things are going much better for me than they were two weeks before Mandie came.
Speaking of Mandie (my excellent, most bodacious girlfriend), i think things are becoming more serious (as we now tell each other that we'll be putting up with each other for a looooooooong time). i can't wait to see her and her family for Thanksgiving. We've also been talking about the Christmas break. Some friends of ours in Corvalis, Oregon (the MD wannabe and his Florida transplant roomie) want us to visit them for New Year's. We also don't want to have some time to ourselves, so we're still undecided on exactly what we'll be doing. Also, thanks to my aunt (the one that used to work for Delta), i will be receiving two “Buddy Passes” where i will be flying on standby (i.e. any open seat on flight day on the plane is mine!) at the cost of the flight taxes ($60 or so).
Also, remember how my car died a few weeks ago? Well, since then, my dad gave me a car that was hanging around his yard (that he repossessed). It's a 1996 Mercury Sable in overall good condition (the interior is falling apart a bit, but nothing too serious). My car that's dead was also sold today for $800 (as is).
Ahhh…back to work!

The Latest

My girlfriend left Monday, rather unfortunately… :( We did go to the French Quarter and walked around from Jackson Square, around the French Market, down to Bourbon, up Bourbon to Canal, then back over to Jackson Square. We even stopped at one of the many daquiri shops on Bourbon and bought one. She was surprised that it is legal to walk down the street with open alcohol. So, we did :) We also ate po' boys over at Mother's (their Ferdi Special is the best: roast beef, turkey, ham, gravy, dressed…mmmmm!) Oh, by the way, in New Orleans, “dressed” means lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, pickles, onion.
On Saturday, we went uptown to the Garden District and played around Audubon Park. We brought food (from Whole Foods) and had ourselves a little picnic…just the two of us. Afterwards, we went home and dressed up for dinner at Tony Angelo's. They have this “Feed Me” special for $25…it's 6 courses and very filling. Their Eggplants Maria (iirc) was excellent. So was their Lobster Cup.
On Sunday, we went to church, then over to my aunt's for a litle get-together. Mandie met my oldest aunt (who is very nice) and her daughter. She also met my “crazy” aunt (the one that believes in all those “X-Files” government conspiracies…on steroids). My uncle (and his family) showed up towards the end of the day. We then ran over (around the corner…literally) to my grandmother's house where Mandie discovered that my grandmother is a “typical grandmother.” When we returned home that evening, her dad's friend came by, picked us up, and took us over to Rivertown. We stared at the Mississippi River for a long while, then walked around the block (to see all the closed shops). We then went out for beignets and cafe au lait over at Cafe du Monde.
Our night was really nice and relaxing. On Monday, we went out to eat with my mother and had some sushi over at Sake Cafe. Pretty nice, except for the two kids started getting fussy at the end. Eventually on Monday, i had to bring her to the airport and see her leave :( Aside from missing each other, we have “adjusted” back to our regular lives. i've returned to working on my thesis (hopefully will finish it this weekend) and my website. Also, my dad has decided to give me a car that has been sitting around in his yard for the last three months as mine will cost too much to fix it. And, that's it for now…Till next time!

Fall Break

Alright, so my midterms are finally over. Can you believe that my German instructor actually made us stay after the midterm and have class? And, when i decided to sleep for the 20 minutes between finishing the test and starting class, she told me i shouldn't do that. Glad i won't be having her next semester for my independent study. Now, onto to better things.
My girlfriend, who almost didn't make it Tuesday night because Cincinatti was having a “bad storm” and had to close its airport. In comparison, we had a tropical storm blow through last week and the airport stayed open the entire time. Wimpy Northerners (i may be wrong here). So, her first flight was delayed forever. Delta finally instead sent her to Atlanta where she was able to catch the connection to New Orleans. That night, she kept me up to 3 in the morning.
Yesterday, i spent most of my day at school (still no car :( ), but spent the evening and night with my girlfriend. We watched Pirates of the Caribbean (first time for me)…well, i watched the movie. She slept next to me. After the movie, i woker her up, and kept her up to 3 in the morning. Also, she was assailed by meeting my immediate family, my aunt, my cousin, my mother's Bible study group, my mother's friend (and her newly adopted baby from the Ukraine)…mostly without me.
Today, we almost slept in and would have if i didn't have that German midterm today. Tonight, we're going out somewhere. My friends that still work at Chili's want me to swing by there tonight (ran into some of them today) and show off my wonderful girlfriend they had heard so much about. So, we'll probably do that.
Tomorrow, we are going down to the French Quarter (Bourbon Street is a distinct possibility for the daytime hours). We might hit the Riverwalk while we are out there.
Saturday will be the fun excursion that she doesn't know about yet…
To me, everything (with her) is going wonderful, whereas everything else (my parents) is going mediocre (at best).

The Home Stretch

It's been really busy the last two weeks. i have the rough draft of my thesis due this week (Friday)…it needs to be 20 pages long. If you want to know what a Philosophy major does for a paper, let me tell you. Since August, i have read about 20 books from really long-winded authors (ranging from Duns Scotus to Kant to Kierkegaard to Nietzsche), each around 300-400 pages long (with the exception of Kierkegaard's Either/Or which was 650 pages long). Out of those 20 books, i found five books that were of use to my paper. Last night, i would up printing eight papers from journals that totalled about 150 pages. i read all of those today. Of them, i found five that were useful. All of these useful books and papers have been put to the side as i begin writing about the history of this particular field (Ethics, Free Will, Omniscience, and Determinism), starting with Augustine's original ideas and ending with the contemporary works of Plantinga, Marilyn Adams, Hick, Pike, and a few others. Then, i work out the progression of my argument which begins with the assumption that the Judeo-Christian idea of God (Yahweh) exists and has some set of “rights” and “wrongs”. This leads to the necessity of human ethics, which then requires a free will (or at least non-fatalism). This leads to the problem of Omniscience and Free will (where i will dive into all of those different theories: Molinism, Presentism, Atemporal Eternalism, Self-determinism, Self-limited Omniscience (and a few other -isms).
Then, this leads to the notion of foretelling prophecies found in the Bible (which will be assumed as true) and its relation to Omnipotence. Finally, somewhere in there, i will discuss De Re knowledge (e.g.: Smith knows Jones well, therefore Smith knows what Jones will do in the future) and De Dicto knowledge (e.g.: Smith knows everything, but he does not know Jones personally, therefore Smith knows what Jones will do in the future).
So, that's my 20 page thesis. Along with that, i have six two-page essays due Thursday for my midterm in Aesthetics. Popular questions:”According to Hume, what is beauty? In relation to subject tastes and objective aesthetic judgements, what is the main problem Hume addresses? What is his solution to the problem? Make sure you explain what he means by 'delicacy of imaginiation.' Do you agree with his solution? Explain why or why not,” and similar questions about Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Schopenhauer, Hegel, Nietzsche, Bell, and Collingwood (yes, that's 9 choices for the 6 i have to write).
And, this week is midterms. i have my Religions of the East on Wednesday, Biology on Monday, and German on Thursday (i think).
But none of that compares to the great thing happening just 48 hours from now: My girlfriend comes in! Yay! We've got a week of New Orleans-style adventure (minus most of the alcohol) and a party or two here and there. It'll be the best part of my week.
Can't wait to have my car back. My stepdad just informed me that he “has” to leave at the buttcrack of dawn to go to work tomorrow (he teaches only on Tuesdays and Thursdays) and because i am out of a car, i have no other way of getting to school. Of course, because i skip classes sometimes, it'd be no problem for me to skip classes the days after Fall Break (like the professors won't be doing anything “special” for that day).
