Authors

It's amazing how many theologians and/or philosophers i refer to only by their last names.  Here's the list of those that i like/want to read:
Theologians:
Barth, Tillich, Schleiermacher, Bonhoeffer, Altizer, Lewis, Schaeffer, Otto, Merton, Wright, Schweitzer.
Philosophers:
Schoepenhauer, Kierkegaard, Scotus, Hegel, Husserl, Heidegger, Kant, Wittgenstein, Nietzsche, Sartre, Popper, Derrida, Foucault, Baudrillard.

Now, if you could name all of their first names (without looking it up), you're really knowledgeable.

Weekends

Weekends suck.
i came home yesterday at two in the afternoon with the intent of getting all of my homework done (that amounted to reading 70 pages of Hegel, two 1.5 page essays, reading 20 pages of Pinker/Linguistics, reading 5 pages of another Linguistics book, and starting to read King Lear).  Now, Saturday night, i’ve read 35 pages of Hegel.  That’s it.  Why?  Yesterday i wound up babysitting for four hours (it was supposed to be one) and then cleaning the house (which i normally do on Saturdays).  Today, even though i woke up early, i wound up helping clear out the utility room so that we can remove the tile flooring in there and then babysitting for another three hours (which was expected).  The response i got both yesterday and today: “you’ve got all weekend to do your homework!”  Yeah, right.  i think i’ll stay home tomorrow while the family’s at church so that i can do my homework without interruptions.
On top of that, i still want to work on reading Dune Messiah but i don’t think i’ll have the time to do so.  Silly me also went to the library and got Idea of the Holy hoping to read through it this weekend as well.  Thankfully, i have a week or so to read it.
6 days till the cold north.
9 days till Mardi Gras (und mein Geburstag!)

Quickie

(1) My fiancee is the bestest in the whole world.
(2) Narrow-mindedness–”Christian” or not–stinks.
(3) i’d love to get a hold of The Humanity of God by Karl Barth.  Neo-Orthodoxy seems really cool.
Have a good weekend!

Tutoring

Nothing much mappening lately.  i auditioned for a job at The Princeton Review on Tuesday.  If i get the job, i’ll be teaching an SAT/ACT prep course two nights a week.  It seemed to go pretty well.  i think i’ll call them tomorrow about the auditions.
Other than that, i’m running through everything at school.  Hegel’s gonna be interesting.  i think i’m gonna like his ideas about the Absolute.  Linguistics is still pretty fun.  Nothing really heavy.  i like being able to read some of the work Chomsky is trained in for a change (As opposed to his political views…which i generally like).  My other class, Shakespeare, reminds me more of my High School English 4 class when we read Shakespeare…except less rigorous.  i haven’t been to my Physics lab yet, but that’s going to be a breeze…  i still need to get started on my independent study in German…i’m translating part of one of Heidegger’s untranslated works (Besinnung).  It’ll be interesting to say the least…and most likely my most difficult task this semester.
Oh yeah…and Dune was a good read.  Definitely recommended for anyone liking good Sci-Fi epics…although i suspect it has some basis in the atmosphere of the Middle East (although Frank Herbert wrote it in the 70s).

Last Term

Grosses Buch seit.  In Fünfzehn Tage zehe ich mein Liebling.  es ist mir sehr aufgeregt.  Aber, geh ich jetzt schlafen.  ‘Nacht, Freunde.

Well, today was the first day of classes. i’m taking only 13 hours…yay! First, i have a class in Linguistics…4000-level. It’s really cool, but it’s at 9 am.  Next, i have Shakespeare…2000-level. It’s going to be easy because i only need to write my opinions of the content. After that, i have a class on 19th century German Idealism, focusing on Hegel. i am also working independently on translating Besinnung by Heidegger.  This will be very difficult.  Lastly, i must take a lab in Physics….easy A.  Also, i have started reading Dune.  Great book already.  In 15 days, i will see my love.  i’m so excited.  Well, i will go to sleep now.  Goodnight, friends.
